My wife's father has recently been diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease. He also has cardiac problems (and other problems which also require medication). He stopped taking his cardiac medicines and had to be re-hospitalized for a week to get him back on track. While there his Dr. had to label him as incompetent because he can no longer successfully administer his own medication due to the Alzheimer's. My wife is now his medical proxy (a legal form in Colorado) this puts her in the position of making medical decisions for him.

We live in Florida so we decided that the best thing for him was to be in a nursing home where they can monitor his conditions and give him the medication he needs. He also is unable to properly care for himself because of the Alzheimer's.

The question is, when I do his taxes for him next year is the FULL cost of the nursing home deductible as a medical expense? The tax codes (pub 502) are somewhat confusing. How does one determine that the needs are "medical" vs. "personal". does this mean that because he is unable to administer his own medications and they do that for him at the nursing home that the expense is deductible?

according to pub 502:
"Nursing Home
You can include in medical expenses the cost of medical care in a nursing home or home for the aged for yourself, your spouse, or your dependents. This includes the cost of meals and lodging in the home if the main reason for being there is to get medical care.
Do not include the cost of meals and lodging if the reason for being in the home is personal. You can, however, include in medical expenses the part of the cost that is for medical or nursing care."
