Why don't you simply move to Canada or the UK to experience universal health uncare?

Even Switzerland and other EU countries have private insurance plans...the whole country.......

You want a government that can't even run a 'cash for clunkers' program at a billion now screwing up a trillion a year?

That is one of the dumbest comments I've ever seen, you must not have insurance!

Private plans also exist in Canada and UK.

So how do we reconcile this with the claim that a public option will run all of the private plans out of business?

Appproximatly $700 Billion of the $2.5 Trillion Americans spend on health care is lost to the administrative costs of feeding a private health insurance industry.

If you had the same 30% expense ratio on your IRA, you'd never be able to afford to retire.

You can't end private health insurance fast enough for me.

"So how do we reconcile this with the claim that a public option will run all of the private plans out of business?"

Canada did not allow private insurance.

The system was so bad that people started to revolt, and now private plans are being 'allowed' in some of the provinces and spreading fast.

Of course, Canadians had the option to seek for pay medical treatment south of the border in the US, and many many thousands did when denied or delayed by their own government.

England is just starting with private pay. The system is so horrible that those who can afford private pay are paying out of their own pockets to get treatment.

Switzerland has 4 companies that provide insurance. everyone MUST sign up. No insurance, no treatment. Simple. Worse, you face a VERY big penalty for not having insurance.

In France, they have 'supplemental insurance'. The gov't only pays about 70% of your bill. You pay it first, then you submit to the gov't for a re-imbursement. They give you about 70% of what you spent back. Then, if you have a supplemental policy, it mmight give you more back.

The majority of French ALSO pay out of their pocket for their supplement, on top of paying 7.5% of their income for 'social services'.

I'm really astonished at how poorly informed you are on this issue. England had private-pay health insurance when I lived in London working for Exxon in the mid-1980's. It's something called BUPA and it's typically offered as a fringe benefit for executive and professional-types in the Top 10% of the income scale.

Correct. And, there was still no answer to my question- the existence of these private plans shows that a public option does not eliminate private plans. You just can't have it both ways- saying private plans go out of business and then saying they save everyone from the evils of the public plan.

BY the way, "thousands" (even if true) is not terribly significant in a country of millions.

it's almost a racket when you think about it.

it they get a couple big corporate customers, they can charge almost anything -- the Corp just deducts the premiums as expense & passes some of the cost to customers.

they only have to avoid being outrageously more expensive than competitors and they have to be nice ( reject the CEO's daughter's claim and lost the account )

for individuals, they can charge literally anything and don't have to be nice at all.

so the other 90% were forced to have the crappy gov't insurance plan run by their version of Dr Deatlh? and "NICE".....the government denier of benefits to the elderly who should just go off and die?

Of course, I forgot...in socialism, the 'elites' are always protected.

The 'common man' always gets the shaft.

Thanks for reminding us of it.

Just like here, Obama and the 'elites' will exempt themselves from all the provisions of the health plan. With their own gold plated insurance.

Which is totally managed and largely funded by the same Government that we're told cannot be trusted with health care.

"Which is totally managed and largely funded by the same Government that we're told cannot be trusted with health care."

Actually, no.

THe gov't health care plan pays premium amounts to private insurers...who provide a menu option. Fed workers and congress have a choice of over 2 dozen plans.

The gov't forks over the big bucks.

NOt only that, but all of these plans would be exempt under Obama Care from any requirements to be 'qualified'.

On the other hand, commoners like you and me would have to join a 'qualified' health plan designed by Dr Death (Ezekiel Emmanaul - brother of Rahm Emmaunel - Obama's henchman).

That means assisted suicide counciling as you get older. Rates high enough to cover all the welfare weenies (out of your pocket).

Actually, yes. The basic requirements for coverage are mandated by the Office of Personnel Management. There is room for variety in the plans and employees/retirees choose from among them. The standards are strict and some plans drop out, but most do very well.

The fact of the matter is that it is a Government plan in conception and funding. The insurance companies find that it works for them and most of the insured are happy with it.

I am not saying that this plan is best for the whole nation. My limited purpose is to demonstrate once again that something run by the Government is not destined to be a disaster. Once we understand this, it becomes easier to look at various proposals without the ideological blinders.

I don't think anyone is saying that government can't do anything right. There's plenty of evidence that government is good at approving gold plated retirement benefits, lengthy vacations and short working hours as well as sterling health insurance plans.

Of course, it's rare that they can fund all these programs without putting a gun in the back of taxpayers and picking their pockets.

The key points you miss here are:

1) Everyone pays for it - either the employer or the employee. There are no 'free riders' getting government employee health care. And it isn't 'cheap'.

2) Everyone who is covered by 'federal employee' healthcare IS a federal employee. They are working. It is not the disabled (they are off loaded onto Medicare), it is not the lazy, it is not the druggies or alcohols.

3) You don't get to be a federal employee unless you are a CITIZEN of the US. You don't show up and deamnd coverage under the fed plans because 'you exist' and 'want it'.

As such, it is a 'low risk' pool where everyone pays.

Both show their socialist 'government knows best' side.....

I can't wait until the government decides intercst is 'too rich' and figures out how to get his 'outrageous wealth' and get him back to work so he can contribute to the tax base.
