Here's a trend you'll be reading more about: part-time "job sharing," not only within firms but across different businesses.

It's already happening across the country at fast-food restaurants, as employers try to avoid being punished by the Affordable Care Act. In some cases we've heard about, a local McDonalds has hired employees to operate the cash register or flip burgers for 20 hours a week and then the workers head to the nearby Burger King BKW +2.39%or Wendy's to log another 20 hours. Other employees take the opposite shifts.

Welcome to the strange new world of small-business hiring under ObamaCare. The law requires firms with 50 or more "full-time equivalent workers" to offer health plans to employees who work more than 30 hours a week. (The law says "equivalent" because two 15 hour a week workers equal one full-time worker.) Employers that pass the 50-employee threshold and don't offer insurance face a $2,000 penalty for each uncovered worker beyond 30 employees. So by hiring the 50th worker, the firm pays a penalty on the previous 20 as well.

These employment cliffs are especially perverse economic incentives. Thousands of employers will face a $40,000 penalty if they dare expand and hire a 50th worker. The law is effectively a $2,000 tax on each additional hire after that, so to move to 60 workers costs $60,000.

A 2011 Hudson Institute study estimates that this insurance mandate will cost the franchise industry $6.4 billion and put 3.2 million jobs "at risk."

Gotta love left wing legislative awesomeness. Now instead of getting full benefits at 1 job that lets people work 40 hours a week, they'll get NO benefits and have to take a SECOND job at another place.

Pause for a moment and consider how breathtakingly bad that is from just a productivity point of view: A company now will hire 2 guys to do the same job and a worker gets less in benefits while having to get that second job. Hopefully the two jobs are located right next door to minimize travel time.

liberalism. Should come with a label describing its toxicity level.

Same ole fear mongering, brought to us by the same people who assured us that Saddam Hussein, with 100% absolute certainty, has amassed a nuclear arsenal large enough to wipe out the United States and all our allies.

Yeah, keep preaching fear.

It works with the toadstools that'll vote for winners like Palin and Santorum.

It does not take research from the Hudson Institute for people to realize the obvious

McDonalds has built a business from one restaurant to the point it operates over 34,000 restaurants worldwide.

They did this to make money
They did this to make investors, small and large, money
They have changed, modified, updated and expanded over the years for one reason ... to make money.
Making money will allow them to open another 34,000 restaurants in the future.

Labor costs are a part of doing business and making money.

You either automate, change buisiness plan or find out how to reduce direct labor costs ... bacause you are in business to make money.

If the Government is the reason your direct labor costs go up, then you must adjust your business to reduce the government charge

If that means cut workers from 40 hrs to 28 hrs ...... you do it. If you dont, you wont make money for yourself and your investors and you will not be able to expand and hire more 28 hr employees.

"It aint personal ..... It's business"

So an Ultraconservative advocacy research group predicts a precise economic doomsday; and you buy it.

When 97% of scientists worldwide predict global warming, its hogwash according to you.

conservatives are so predictable, any social program spells disaster [Period!] Massive military projects are beneficial no matter what. Remember it was the Hudson Institute that advocated that a Thermonuclear War was winnable. The only Republican message is doom, that's sad. Republicans have to come up with a message other than fear, and chaos. Every Republican message and strategy is fear and crisis, debt crisis, cliff crisis, ceiling crisis, sequestration crisis. Republicans are creating a crisis to crisis message, trying to keep their toadstools in a prison of fear.
And that's just more of it here.

Really boring. Its been going on for years. And 50 employees is the threshhold for all sorts of requirements being placed on businesses, at both state and federal level, and has been for decades.

And companies have been spending a lot of time and imagination over that period in figuring out ways to get around these requirements.

Nothing is new. Except the dishonesty behind this "Light bulb On!" phony revelation.

And what a surprise that the people, through their government, try to thwart the companies that do not want to honor a commitment their society has made.
