Happy New Year, Fools...

I haven't had or used a credit card in better than three years. Yea me. Problem is, I really need one now. I'm travelling a lot for work, and tying up my cash is getting increasingly difficult (I do use a visa check card). Car rentals are a impossible from a practical sense with a check card.

I have a FICO of 700, all is current on my credit report with no collections or anything, BUT I do carry $8500 in balances on cards that I closed when I started my debt reduction process. Dumb, I know, but this is where I'm at.

At last, the question, has anyone with a similar scenario had any luck getting a card? I'd very much like to get a Citi AAdvantage card, as I have tens of thousands of miles with American Airlines...it would be a nice bonus. I know there's no magic number, or factor, but if anyone has any insight, I'm all ears.

PS -- is it even worth calling in to apply and be able to talk to a rep, or is that generally a dead end?
