Of course we know about the hedgerow country in France. What plants were used?

The hedgerow article in Wikipedia

gives "at least 60 percent of the shrubs are hawthorn, blackthorn, and (in the southwest) hazel, alone or in combination. The first two are particularly effective barriers to livestock. Other shrubs and trees used include holly, beech, oak, ash, and willow."

I have heard that "hedge posts" are preferred for fence posts, especially corner posts, where they last a long time. And we have learned before that thorn trees, ie black locusts, are preferred for barn timbers due to their resistance to rot.
