Often the less details given, the better. If it has been a long term relationship then it should be obvious what the reasons are as you have both gone thru the challenges together.

If it was a long term relationship I would talk to the girl directly. A letter is a cowards way out. If you have only recently met, then I think a couple of line email or something is okay.
