Oh yes they did. Can you say "death panels"?

That's exactly my point. The early drafts of the health care bill tried to promote some discussion of medical interventions among the old-old between doctors and patients - but the hue and cry that came from that was so politically painful that it was quickly pulled.

That wasn't a conversation, unfortunately, but an immediate revulsion to even having a discussion about whether something should be done about allocating so much of our medical resources to interventions for the very old, instead of for younger or poorer patients. Even if that something is just removing obstacles to old-old patients making those sorts of decisions for themselves.
