OK, here's the breakdown:

1) When the 24th puzzle goes up on May 10th at 1 PM EDT, you have to be one of the first 10,000 to complete the puzzle and submit your puzzle completion form. The puzzle completion form is time-stamped based on the Google server's clock, and this is the time that officially "counts" as when you finished the last puzzle, not the time you were sent to the form. So if you're serious about this contest, fill out that form the second you're directed to it, and do it on a broadband connection!

Note that this form is not your contest entry form. You fill that out after you've submitted the puzzle completion form. This second form must also be filled out by 1 PM EDT May 11 and this form is also time-stamped. This second time stamp is your official entry time for the contest.

So to be in the pool of 10,000, you must (a) be in the first 10,000 to complete the puzzle (as time-stamped in the first form) and (b) be in the first 10,000 to complete the entry form (as time-stamped in the second form). This second part is important, because it's what the judges will use in the case of a tie between two or more people for the puzzle completion time stamp.

Note: If there are less than 10,000 qualifying entries by 1 PM May 11th, then that's it -- they won't extend the deadline to get to 10,000 entrants.

2) If you're one of those lucky 10,000 people, you're in the final puzzle challenge. As another poster noted, you'll get a cryptex mailed to you, scheduled for May 18th delivery, for making it this far. The cryptex is important -- you get a screen shot of four codes with your cryptex, one of which opens it. Inside it is a scroll with instructions on how to access the final phase puzzle challenge.

However, an e-mail with instructions on how to access the final puzzle challenge will also be sent -- before May 18th. It's not clear from the rules description if this e-mail will have the same instructions as the scroll in the cryptex, or if it will simply tell you to use the screen shot codes to open the cryptex and get the real instructions.

3) Once you have the instructions to get to the final puzzle challenge, you can't actually do anything with them until 1 PM EDT on Friday, May 19th. From that time, you have until 1 PM Sunday, May 21st, to figure out the five puzzles that make up the final challenge.

Here's the important part: Your start time for doing this is not 1 PM May 19th. Your start time is when you log in to the final puzzle challenge and click the "Begin" button. From this point on, you cannot pause it, restart it, log out, or quit your browser -- doing so disqualifies you immediately. This is good, because it means working stiffs like me have an equal shot at finishing in the shortest time.

If, from the time you press the "Begin" button to the time you complete the last puzzle and click a final "submit" button, you are the person who finished the challenge in the shortest time, then you win the grand prize. If there's a tie for shortest completion time, then whichever person began the challenge first is chosen as the winner. If that results in a tie, then whoever submitted their contest entry form from Phase 1 first is the winner. And if even that's not enough and there's still a tie, the tied contestants have to write an essay of no more than 100 words on a subject related to the book.

And this grand prize is a doozy, valued at over $128,000 (copied/pasted from the official rules page):
