Ok. I am really soooo not with it. I have been following this thread since its immaculate conception via Mike. What is SSDD?

To Mike, as you defend the high ground for IELIAs, be careful not to fall victim to the blind spots you challenge others on:

"Lastly, please don't hold me responsible for others who call themselves "Financial Planner." I will soon be writing a 6 hour "Professional Proficiency Exam" to qualify as a Certified Financial Planner (CFP). Until those letters are behind my name, I'm not."

By the time you complete your exam and are licensed to use the mark you will be back here railing that you should not be tarred with the same brush as those run of the mill people who call themselves financial planners but who have no formal training and credentialling. You, after all are a CFP, a Certified Financial Planner.

I, for one, will join you in that protest. So let's argue for some clarity at this juncture. Many, but not all, insurance agents also "hold out" as financial planners. Some but not all of those persons have been licensed to use the CFP mark, based on experience, education and demonstrated knowledge. Some have not. Some have attained the ChFC designation. Some have none. Some CFPs are also insurance agents. Some are not. Many, in each category, are professionals with integrity. Some in each category are either unscrupulous or ignorant or both.

As we pursue these conversations the level of discourse and the value of the exchanges will certainly be increased to the extent that we are careful not to extrapolate universal conclusions from specific incidents. Let's excoriate those individuals who, by their behavior, have demonstrated that their advice is less than thrustworhy either because of their ignorance or because of their avarice. Let's challenge perspectives and assumptions. But let's avoid assigning motives to present company based on the ghosts of our prior experience.
