old Doc Peck didn't believe in pain killers, $5 a visit, he'd grind until it hurt too much, do a temp filling, come back next week...

My childhood dentist, Dr. Gilbert, didn't use a pain killer either, or a water cooled drill, for that matter... What Novacaine, just to fill a tooth?! pffft!! When you started squirming and bucking too much in his chair, he simply stuck his knee in your chest to hold you still. Then he'd drill some more. I swear I smelled smoke from the drill doing its job. I will say that his fillings did tend to hold up very well though (thank goodness.)
