On a positive note, it DOES help and it IS effective to write to your Representatives. In most cases, constituent mail is taken VERY seriously.

If you are so moved, here are a few hints to help make sure you get a response.

First, address only one issue per letter. This allows them to respond without having to write a five page response explaining every position under the sun. Trust me, you will get much more attention by sending seven, single-issue letters than you will by sending one seven-issue letter.

Next, don't send it to poeple who aren't your Representative (i.e. mailing every member of Congress). They will only forward your letter to your Representative without reading or acknowledging it.

Finally, Don't send a postcard, petition or form letter. If you really care, let them know in a personally written letter (letters are always better than phone calls -- why let someone else translate your concern to the Representative for you?). Also, postcards and form letters have the feel of "Astroturf" campaigns as opposed to legitimate grass roots.

And don't be afraid to write and say "Good job" if they do something you like. Believe me, the only time people write is when they are upset. A kind word goes a long way -- you may just get a personal phone call from the Congressman/woman!
