This is a question that is fairly simple, but as a recent immigrant (never couls spell that word), things that are obvious to an American are not so obvious to me.

Anyway, my wife and I have our IRA's, brokerage accounts etc., but my wife asked me an interesting question recently. My wife has not worked in the US and might never do so. However, I do work and pay social security, medicare etc.

When my wife reaches retirement age, if she has never worked, will she still be eligable for a state (social security pension)? If not, does anyone know what the qualifying rules are for pensions and how it is worked out how much you get? Is it based on contributions or is it the same for everyone? Also, if I die (before or after retirement), is she eligable to continue to collect my pension (assuming she does not have one herself).

finally, does anyone know whether this changes if we are only Permanent Aliens (with Green cards), rather than full blown citizens?>>

Dave, your best bet is to call the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213 to pose these questions. They answer these issues all the time, and you're more likely to get a more accurate reply through that agency.

Best........Pixy

Thanks for any help.

Dave.
