One advantage the TSP has is that it is an automatic investment taken out of your paycheck.... where as with a Roth IRA "sometimes" people wait and miss the deadline, or something comes up and the spend to money on something else... The TSP forces you to be more disciplined about investing...

A certain percentage of your paycheck goes straight into and index fund (pre-tax $$$ working for you) every month... no worries.
