One can certainly rationalize it that way, but the larger point is that there doesn't seem to be any obvious reason why the brain should be wired like that. One might naively think that neuronal connections that lead to conclusions at odds with reality would be unfavorable and strongly selected against.

I've written about this before. We tend to invoke supernatural explanations for things that don't have an obvious explanation. Those of us who spent time trying to figure out the origin of the universe, diseases and even strange noises in the night would not only have failed to find the answers but would have detracted from practical pursuits like gathering food. It's only now that we have sufficient free time for abstract research.

Another pet theory I proposed was that those not predisposed to believe in the stories that the authorities used as a form of control were summarily rounded up and removed from the gene pool.
