One had the audacity to question the depth of my convictions because I don't wear black or own a pentacle.

URGH?! OK, let's take a mainstream parallel: "I question your commitment to your investment plan because you are not currently clutching a cell phone, Wall Street Journal or wearing a suit."

What a completely asinine theory to expound. The worst part about that, to my mind, is that is would have stunned me into stuttering silence. I wouldn't have been able to come up with something suitably cutting to reply. I'd've just stood there sputtering, "Yeah, well, that's...well, you''re a DOO-DOO HEAD!"

Just because I do not choose to run around advertising my non-mainstream beliefs with pentacles and "witchy" garb doesn't mean I'm not deeply connected and committed to them. In fact, I'm pretty happy with the fact that my observance of the 'old-new' religion does not necessarily mean that I have to run around frightening people who have religions which teach them to be afraid of anything that isn't of their 'flavor' or getting into endless, pointless arguments with people who want to 'save' me from one thing or another.

Hmm, I suspect a nerve has been struck. I might even form a bruise on that one. :)

...neither in nor out of the closet, personally...
