one item i did not note in the responses (i may have overlooked) is
that if you opt to close an account, request that the closing reflect it was done at the customer's request - and do that in writing. if/when u do a check of ur credit history, and the closing is not so refelcted, u can go back to the credit agency and request correction.

There was a sample credit card close letter posted here early this year. I used it to close a CC with Fleet. I haven't checked my credit report since I did that, though. If you want a copy of the letter, let me know.
