One last thought - during times when I was going through family illness and death, I made sure to keep enough miles to get my kids pretty much any open seat on a plane. If you have any friends who are heavy travelers, you may be able to get award tickets this way.*

On the award side(like in the past month or so), I have been able to get my son a few tickets at fewer than full mileage because he's willing to take anything and he isn't trying to go to popular tourist destinations.

*It's against the rules to sell the mileage tickets but favors are not prohibited.

If you are driving and can plan your stops, many hotel chains are currently offering discounts for prepaid rooms(some as high as 25-30% off). Choice & Country Inn & Suites are two I have gotten emails from. I stick to higher(3 or more) stars but with information from on what hotels are likely where, I do use name your own price at priceline.

You would be wise to plan your stops & make sure you have reservations for each night. Hotels are surprisingly highly booked these days.
