One thing all these hoaxes have in common, without exception, is that they ask you to repost the message as your Facebook status or ask you to forward the message to your friends. Same putrid wine in new bottles. There have been chain letters and spam in e-mail way back when. There was very little when it all went through uucp, but once it started going by smtp and pop, the infestation began. It has gotten so bad on usenet that most people I know are dropping out of that and using controlled mailing lists instead to get rid of the spam and trolls. Before that, it was probably a problem with CB radios too. As new media are devised, new ways to abuse them arise very quickly. 419 crap started during the paper mail era and has diversified to the Internet. Pity.
