One thing I like to use is the "comparable sales" item in
Yahoo Real Estate (it is at the bottom of the page). Just type
in your street and zipcode, and it will tell you what houses in
your area sold for, and when they sold. It gives you addresses,
date of sale, price of sale, and distance from you.

It isn't an "appraisal", since it doesn't take into account stuff
like short-term price appreciation or differences between your house
and others, but you can get a good feel for prices and recent price
trends in your local area. This info is especially useful if
you live in a big condo complex or tract of similarly-built houses,
as you can generally tell that "the three-bedrooms sell for X and
four-bedrooms sell for Y", etc.
