Our 401K is with Vanguard and we have a brokerage option. I work for Google. The commissions are great ($2) and you can buy whatever you want. I don't know what percentage of employees take advantage of it. The general consensus around here seems to be index funds with a percentage of bonds.

But some of us do take advantage of it.

I'd say do it if you would buy individual stocks with the money if it wasn't in the 401K plan. If you are just getting started investing, perhaps you should get comfortable with stock investing first before going all-in.
