Our poor 'people' live better than 3 billion people on the planet, yet they moan and groan. Maybe they should try living in Togo for a year?

What you suggest is that the poor learn to be content with their lot because it could be worse.

The rich, however, are held to no such comparative limitations. Can't possibly bring CEO salaries back to those Dark Ages where they made only 25x more than the average worker's salary, instead of 400x more as today's brilliant and deserving CEO's command.
