Encouraging news -- a test has been developed that is very good at detecting pancreatic cancer early in the disease, when there's a much greater chance for treating it successfully. It's a blood test, which uses an antibody to a substance that's produced exclusively by pancreatic cancer cells. The antibody links up only with cells that produce it. Evidence of antibody-cell linkage in a person's blood sample indicates the presence of pancreatic cancer cells.

The test is expected to be available in 2-3 years.

Because this antibody homes in on and attaches to pancreatic cancer cells, it's going to be studied as a means for treatment as well. It can be attached to a substance that's toxic to the cancer cells, and when these payload-carrying antibodies are injected into the patient's blood, the antibodies carry the toxic treatment directly to the cancer cells and spare normal cells and normal tissue. The tiny pilot study done so far was extremely encouraging.
