Saturday I finished a third of the incomplete paper clutter project that's been on my dining table forever and a day.

This took hours. But now I have three years' worth of medical/insurance/flexible spending account documentation sorted by date and put away in the file cabinet.

The other two thirds is the less daunting of the entire project and will respond well to the 15-minute treatment, beginning tonight.

Yay!!! Why is paper so overwhelming? I have issues keeping my paper dragon tamed. I finally have it where just a few minutes a week (10 - 30 mins usually unless I get distracted ;P) takes care of it. My office looks good & I smile at it every time I enter. May you find that peace soon.

Why is paper so overwhelming?

IMHO, it's because paper has meaning.

It's really easy for me to organize other people's paper because it doesn't have meaning to me.

Excellent insight! I will keep that in mind when my sister complains about my mom's paper (so cool that it's no longer my problem).
