Thanks for the info on units vs. shares of a fund. I guess I'll be looking mostly at the provided info for making decisions with a little extra gathering from sites like morningstar for details.

I'm a little skeptical of the Aetna Index Plus Large Cap VP. It seems like the "plus" makes it more of a "index based" fund than an index fund. I'm treating it like a regular fund and not allocating any more to it than other choices. Right now those are the Fidelity VIP Contrafund Portfolio, and the Janus Aspen Series Worldwide Growth Portfolio.
