Per the suggestion of folks on this board, I have asked DS's college if there is a fee to pay them by credit card. There is not, and it seems that I can actually pay them directly and not go through a middleman. So anything else that I should have asked?

I haven't asked DD's college yet, but plan to do that as well. I'm just waiting to get a calendar from her school with an idea of when I'm supposed to be paying.

The only thing that the financial aid office did tell me was to call the credit card prior to making the payment to tell them there would be a large payment being charged so that it doesn't get denied. Apparently, she has this problem with AMEX frequently, and as AMEX is one of my cards, this is good information to have.

Now, if only Discover would run one of those 5% promotions for educational expenses....
