Last night PBS Frontline had a program on the politics of global warming. They said when Obama was elected, a consensus had formed that global warming needed to be addressed.

But opponents have undertaken a major program to undermine confidence in global warming science. A major player has been the Tea Party, who sees global warming as another move toward big government.

The background story is "Who Killed the Electric Car" all over again. Major fossil fuel interests (Exxon Mobil and the Koch brothers) have put millions into associations who publish books denying global warming.

They have made major efforts to defeat candidates who supported cap and trade. Incumbents have been defeated in primary elections. Hence Cap and Trade passed in Congress, but the Senate tabled the issue due to opposition.

The program goes quite deeply into the techniques used to undermine the science. Scientists now routinely find their emails requested for review under the Freedom of Information Act.

Fossil fuel companies have increasingly pulled their names from sponsorship lists. Now they find ways to give anonymously.

Once again we see government by gridlock. Confuse the issues, block any progress and maintain the status quo.

Seems like we should rename our system of government "eternal gridlock."
