Television networks barred from blasting viewers with excessively loud commercials from today

We've all been there, trying to wind down after a long day to a TV show that plays softly in the background - only to be rudely jolted by a blaring commercial that airs at twice or three time the normal level.

But from Thursday, sanity will be restored when the Federal Communications Commission implements the Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation (CALM) Act that will regulate the audio levels of TV commercials.

The new rules will ensure TV stations, cable operators, satellite TV providers or other multichannel video program distributors apply standard audio levels to commercial advertisements transmitted to viewers.
