Perhaps you should check out the Pax World Fund. It has managed consistently good long-term returns in solid companies (AMGN, ENRON, MERCK, SONY ADR, VODAPHONE ADR, etc.) without violating its socially responsible criteria. It manages this, in part, because it invests in companies that are not being sued, or facing regulatory disciplinary action for being "irresponsible". There is something to be said for investing in good companies that do not have pending lawsuits or regulatory investigations dragging down their bottom line. Furthermore, Pax World is rated by Morningstar at 4-5 stars and considered to be "low risk-low volatility." It stands as eloquent proof that one can be profitable and humane at the same time.
