Powering NY City with renewables requires the power be wired in. There are abundant wind resources off the coast, hydro resources to the north, and the immense wind resources of the Midwest are not out of reach of long distance power transmission if Wiki is to be believed.

I see the idea of long distance power transmission, like this, just to get wind (or other renewables) from where it is generated into a place like NYC a bit silly. Is it just so NYC can say it is green powered? If the power is generated hundreds of miles away, say in Iowa, why not consume it there? If/when they have 100% renewable and have extra, then ship it off somewhere. But I doubt that is the case.
