Presuming your son is getting books from the library--given the volume, the librarian can presumably recommend books popular with local middle schoolers.

I hope he has friends who love reading as much as he does--perhaps they can swap/share books and have someone to discuss them with.

Just remembered…The Hobbit. He might even manage Lord of the Rings. I think he's old enough to read a book, watch the movie made from it, and discuss the choices made by the filmmakers on what to include/exclude, how they show descriptive text and interior thoughts, notice how/whether the music heightens the emotion.
