The Fool: If you could go back in time and witness one event in history, what would you go back and see?
tmfannc: The Trinity atomic bomb test. Perhaps a strange choice, but truly a defining moment in history. Or the first moon landing--if I could witness it in person, of course. :)
The Fool: What industry do you follow most closely and why?
tmfannc: Biotechnology. It's fascinating, high tech, has huge profit potential and is NOT internet-related.
The Fool: How'd you find out about the Fool? (Make your answer as colorful and truthful as possible.)
tmfannc: In early August, 1994, an AOL disk arrived in the mail attached to Scientific American magazine. About a month earlier I had decided to find out about this Internet thing, so I had requested the sign-up package from Compuserve (because AOL was supposedly the more frivolous service). They sent a three inch thick package of instructions which promptly went into a lower desk drawer for "later." When I saw the AOL disk (no documentation), I just put it in, and 10 minutes later I had an account and was looking at a Fool icon on the AOL welcome screen. (This just happened to be the day (~+1,~+2) that the Fool site launched on AOL.) It was a life changing moment. The sad thing is that I didn't buy AOL until 4 years later.
The Fool: Okay Gilligan (or Ginger), you're stuck on a deserted island. What one material possession would you hope to have with you?
tmfannc: Don't be silly -- a satellite phone. Not that I would necessarily use it right away.
The Fool: Share with us your best money-saving secret -- cutting coupons, sneaking candy into the movies, shopping on Wednesday and pretending you're over 65?
tmfannc: Working at the Fool. It does wonders for one's professional clothing budget.
The Fool: Given a second chance, what financial decision would you like to do over?
tmfannc: Well, there were these Iomega options, see? I made, and then lost, a year's salary in 8 months.
The Fool: Did you ever do something as a child that you look back on now and say, 'Wow, I'm lucky even to be alive after that!'
tmfannc: If, by child, you include my teenaged years, then yes, many times. My children are paying for that now!
