Profit making entitites have a way of disappearing if they don't keep the best interests of their customers in mind.

I'd rephrase that to say that they have a way of disappearing if they don't keep the wishes of their customers in mind. Customer's wishes and their best interests sometimes coincide but not always. And no, I'm not one of the arrogant "government knows best" types, I'm just skeptical that the free market would really make things that much better. After all, Saturday morning television is profitable, and it probably represents its customers wishes, but I don't think it is necessarily in their best interests.
