Did anyone catch the prom episode last week? Or was it two weeks ago? I just got around to listening to it on my iPod the other day. Best line, which I, as a seagoing type, found insanely funny - something like "Unless I'm really smashed, I'm pretty uncomfortable around the open water."

My memories of prom are sort of vague now. I went to the senior prom as a junior (1988). She wore a pink dress. The song was "The Time of My Life" from the Dirty Dancing Soundtrack and they must have played it a dozen times that night. At the post-prom party, I remember one of the acts they had was a hypnotist, and she was one of the last two people on the stage with him...and he had her chasing imaginary elephants around the room. I really liked her, and we ended up dating that summer before she headed off to college. One of the best summers of my life. We saw each other a few times after that....haven't seen her, I think, since the fall of 1989. I heard she got an MBA and is married and living in Minnesota.

Senior prom, 1989...I didn't like my date so much, sort of manuevered into asking by her best friend. I can't really remember the song - was it "In the Air Tonight?" by Phil Collns. I never got up the courage to ask the girl I really wanted to. She and I, although we never dated, were great friends, and years later she told me once "I wish we had gone to the prom." The girl I did go with (no value judgment here, just what happened) was pregnant by the following Christmas and married. Divorced a few years later, went to law school, remarried and is now a pretty succcessful corporate lawyer.

My other defining memory of that night is that we all went to my best friends house to watch movies and drink (an older friend had bought us some booze...what was it...I think just plain old whiskey to make whiskey sours - God, had I ever drinken a whiskey sour before or since? Well, there was an amaretto sour kick a few years ago....I remember being nervous buying the sour mix at the grocery store, would they bust us for buying the sour mix?).

We get to my friends house, this is a few hours after prom now, (I think we made a brief stop at the official post-prom party) and we go into his house and the girls head off in one direction to gossip and he pulls me aside and says "Dude, I just &%@$-ed Jane!" Not, I just lost my virginity, or I just had sex with but right to I just f-bombed her. I was young and naive and still struck by that.
