Does anyone have any suggestions as to a brokerage for
being able to buy, sell, and hold government-issued bonds and short
term notes from various countries?

Specifically, I follow US, Canada, Japan, Australia, New Zealand,
Germany, France, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, UK, Switzerland, and Sweden.
(Ideally I'd like to be able to go even further afield
sometimes, for example 2-year Turkish paper looks good to me right now. But,
the main interest is in the big industrialized economies above).

I am able to do this now with a Swiss bank account, but the transaction
costs are brutal (ticket fees, commissions, stamp tax, you name it).
Some recent trades cost me 0.67% one way.

I'm not a US resident, but many US-based brokerages have accounts
for non residents. (I use Schwab and Interactive Brokers for equities,
for example). So, basically, I'm open to the idea of an account
anywhere in the world that will give me access to these bonds
at a good quoted price, with reasonable transaction costs and tight
exchange rate spreads.
I'd like to trade on line, but it isn't a mandatory requirement.

Suggestions welcome!
