Qatar just bought 12 French-made Dassault Rafale fighters and 24 Typhoon fighter jets worth $8bn from the United Kingdom as the Gulf state continues to stock up on high-tech weaponry.

Oh that was over a week ago, old news. }};-D

We actually looked at Rafale but they don't have the political sway. Nice looking airplane with good capabilities. Many of our northern deployment fields have carrier style arrestor gear due to short runways so it would fit right in. Our Hornets are the USN version as they were built tougher than the land version and had the hook.

What are its chances of replacing the CF-18?
Not good.

As capable as the Rafale is, this will not be enough to woo the decision-makers in Ottawa. The Rafale has two very large strikes against it: Politics and risk.

Politically, Dassault just does not have the lobbying power of the American defence giants Boeing and Lockheed. The Eurofighter Typhoon enjoys the political weight of four nations (UK, Germany, Italy, and Spain). Even tiny Saab can exert greater amount of persuasion thanks to its use of Bombardier airframes and GE-sourced engines.
