Question 1: The work seems to really heat up my computer. I went into preferences and found that I could make some adjustments, but don't know how draconian I need to be. What would anyone suggest as my settings to keep BOINC from melting my computer?

Did reducing the fraction of the time your computer allotted to BOINC solve your temperature problems?

I notice that I never have temperature problems from running BOINC at almost 100%, but my machines are desktop machines with quite a bit of cooling. On has 10 to 14 fans in it, depending on how you count them. I.e, there are two fans inside that cool the processors. There is another fan inside that cools a dead spot in the case (where the RAM is). And the power supply has two fans in it, but they are "in series", so you might count it as only one. The only time I have cooling problems is in August when the temperature in the room goes up to over 90F and I have no air conditioning. When the processors start to get too hot, I power down the machines.

Heat problems seem to be with laptops. It is my opinion that they are incorrectly designed. If you cannot run them at 100% cpu, then they should put in slower cooler cpus that do not exceed the cooling capacity designed into those machines, or they should increase the cooling somehow.

It seems like putting a 1000 horsepower into a car meant for driving on the street. It is nuts having that much, since it means that you spend a greater fraction of the time waiting at stoplights than the cars with only 100 horsepower. Or in the parking lot at traffic court. ;-)
