Thank you in advance.
My wife works part-time as a tutor and will be filing as self-employed this year. She has also recently become interested in medical transcription and signed up for a course (via internet, everything was mailed to her). She bought books, materials, as well as a transcription machine, and plans to start working as a transcriptionist starting next year around march - she will be self-employed and already has a job lined up for herself in march.

My question is this - what, if any, of these transcription course expenses are deductible this year? If not this year, is any of it deductible next year after she actually starts working (especially the transcription machine)?

On another note pertaining to her tutoring job, she drives twice a week to a school where she tutors approximately 18 miles away. Is the standard deduction 32.5 cents a mile for travel (we will not be itemizing travel/auto expenses)? Is there any special receipts, documentation to have on hand for tax purposes (in case of an audit) to justify/prove the mileage we are deducting (Is having the contract and school address on hand enough)?

Again thanks,
