Hi! My wife and I both live in the U.S. I'm an American and she is a Japanese citizen (legal resident here in the U.S., with SSN). She would like to transfer approximately $20,000 from a savings account of hers in Japan to our joint checking account here in the States. So my question is:

Is any portion of this money going to be subject to taxes?

My common sense tells me that it shouldn't be taxed at all, of course, because it was earned before we were married and she's just moving it to a different account (albeit in a different country). But it wouldn't surprise me at all to learn that Uncle Sam has some way of taking a bite out of it if it's over a certain dollar amount or whatever.
