Porky pets shed the pounds at animal fit club slimming competition

A collection of chubby cats and chunky canines are now fighting fit after shedding the pounds at an animal fit club.

The group of 17 porky pets were forced to ditch their full fat meals and dinner plate leftovers in a bid to help them lose their love handles.
Cats, canines and rabbits took part in the animal slimming competition, dubbed the PDSA Pet Fit Club, with phenomenal results.

Tough diets and strict exercise regimes helped the plump pets lose a whopping 86kg (13st 7lb) between them, roughly the equivalent of 28 Yorkshire terriers.

Dedicated Cavalier King Charles spaniel Jack was crowned the biggest loser in 2012 after shedding an impressive 6kg (14lb).

His owner Rose Welsh said the over fed seven-year-old's health had deteriorated dramatically before his recent health kick.

'Today he is a different dog and we call him Jumping Jack instead of Jumbo Jack, as he jumps every time he barks now,' Ms Welsh, from Stanmore, Middlesex, said.

'He is fit, healthy and happy, everything a pet should be, and we are absolutely thrilled.'

PDSA Senior Veterinary Surgeon, Sean Wensley, added: 'This is a great success story for all concerned.

'Having adopted a seriously overweight animal, Rose has done a wonderful job in managing Jack’s food intake and safely increasing his exercise.
'As for Jack, he undoubtedly feels much fitter and happier, and has a greater life expectancy than when he was overweight.'

The extravagantly named cat Fifi Bottomley was another success story, losing 2kg (4.4lb) in the slimming regime organised by veterinary charity PDSA.

While another notable mention goes to rabbit slimmer Bobby who managed to shed 29 per cent of her body weight.
