These are words I've heard all too often from surviving spouses . . . AND are virtually verbatim what I often say to people who hesitate in buying life insurance. Take heed, all of you who plan to "self insured". ;-)

Actually, Uncle Sam helps out quite a lot, if . . . one does some planning in advance and takes advantage of what's available.

As for the questions as to whether one can get such additional "deductions", I'll leave that to the very good resident tax expert.
