" Similarly, political debates (although filled with beliefs and personal values) also become ultimately testable via the march of history. I might claim we need to go to war to stop the use of weapons of mass destruction, but if ultimately no such weapons are found, my claim loses credibility."

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Folks use the same approach to argue about "wars on poverty"
where poverty increases at the end of the day.
The argument does not hold water as there are reasons to
take steps to help the poor - just as there are reasons to
go to war.

But evangelism is integral to several faiths - some tend more
toward "believe this or we shall smite thee" or "act this
way or we shall stone thee" or "talk about things this way or
we shall call thee bad names and not allow you to pass this
grade".

Faith in political approaches - with few exceptions - has
also proven themselves remarkable failures. Faith in science
is fine - but science does not decide policy. People decide
policy - and despite DNA mapping and behavioral sciences,
people tend to fall outside the scientific and logical
- to ask questions that physics cannot really answer - and to
have wants and needs and desires and dreams that go beyond
scientific analyses and logic.

I think that this is a good thing.
