"And, here is the best part, there is a place in Fort Worth that is paying 90 cent a pound live weight for feral hogs. Apparently there is a big overseas market for wild boar meat. Whouda thunk it." - Bighairymike

Wild pigs have way more flavor than commercially raise pork. Like I've said, they feed commercial hogs now with designer diets designed by computers with least cost feed formulation. They are kept in sterile specific pathogen free housing with no access to dirt or grass or nuts or any of the normal things that pigs used to eat. They are kept up off the ground on slatted floors where the feces and urine fall through and it is flushed like every thirty minutes or so and that is why the pork in the grocery store is so uniformly mild and soft.

It ain't your grandpa's pig farm anymore. Pigs are raised more like commercial chickens now. That is the only way to compete in the pig business now. It's all giant corporations like Con Agra and Goldkist and Seaboard Farms and whatnot.

Little mom and pop farms can't compete with the giant corporations that raise hogs. There are a few people that raise hogs for their own consumption and maybe family and friends but the majority of hogs are now raised very scientifically similar to the way I used to keep laboratory animals.
