"Are you familiar with the famous rabbit hutch hotels in Japan. Your "room" is essentially a bunk with a door in a multi-tiered bunk bed. The john is down the hall. Where real estate is costly and short (two hour) commutes are desirable, such solutions are acceptable to many. But they are not so attractive to Americans who like the wide open spaces. On the other hand, efficiency apartments in NYC are often shared and must be quite cozy--with every available space used for storage. We have them too where costs are high and resources are limited." - Paul
