"How do all the people in dense city areas get power from the roof top...i.e. NYC...or better yet, NYC in the winter?"

They don't. Might be worth while having rooftop gardening tho. It could supply a reasonable fraction of the fresh vegetables for the city.

A New Zealand study showed that at least small cities could be powered from solar roofs by their suburbs. An Israeli study claimed that the overall most pleasant urban design was a strip city - a strip of transportation in the center, a strip either side for industrial, small parks either side, a strip for shops and such, more small parks, then housing of various kinds outside that, all small enough for easy walking distances. Might be worth putting the two concepts together!

I would like to see a study checking whether an arrangement could be made in which an individual place, commercial or residential, could invest by paying for storage and providing space for it, getting paid by the utility for things like arbitrage, frequency control, etc., with the utility running it for a fee. If the return was adequate, and it could disconnect and keep critical loads like furnace controls and fans running in an emergency . . .! They are talking about vehicle to grid technology with electric vehicles, how about emergency backup to grid? Perhaps an electric vehicle could serve, or a hybrid. I read of one man who kept his critical things running in emergency by disconnecting and using an inverter connected to his Prius.
