"how would you invest 1 million - remember you cannot touch the principal and need the interest to live on?

-----------------

Why can't you touch the principal?
Being unable to touch the principal eliminates stocks completely - since if you ever take any profits, a portion of what you sell will be "principal".

That leaves bonds, treasuries, CDs, savings accounts, etc.
And, with bonds at least, there is a chance you could lose principal.

You are forgetting dividends, return of capital, and capital appreciatiation. Sometime in the future there is a chance that
growth will resume.

Stocks would not be eliminated if you are trying to maintain the
principal investment dollars.

After most fires something grows back - you just can't necessarily
predict what or where it will be.
