"I believe the general idea used to be that one paid more than one's medical expenses while young and healthy, in the knowledge that one would pay less than one's medical expenses when older and sicker. The general idea was that it would balance out for most of us and take care of others who were always sicker.

Of course, many of us paid more when we were younger, only to have the insurance industry switch to an actuarial method somewhere in the middle, so that we paid more when we were young and now we're paying more as we age, too.

You'll have to pardon some of us for thinking that this isn't quite fair. And for thinking that we've already paid the subsidy." - Karen

I am "for" a single payer system through the Federal Government without any insurance companies involved. I hate them. All of them. They are parasites. I don't trust them any farther than I can spit. They do not have my best intersts at heart and I know that if I was to really get sick they'd cut me off in a minute if they could. If that makes me a socialist - so be it - I'm a socialist.

I have had good insurance pretty much my whole life since I worked for the State of Tennessee and before that the University of Georgia, but always in the back of my mind is "THERE BUT FOR THE GRACE OF GOD GO I!" I know how quickly life can turn on someone. Your whole life can come crumbling down around you at the drop of a hat. Life can be cruel and unfair and often is. And when that happens it is not the time to trust your life to a for-profit insurance company. They do not have your best interest at heart.
