It does seem to me that the skyline in Richmond, VA has steadily moved/declined from aesthetics to pure function over the course of the last 300 years. The move from various Corinthian/Ionic/Doric columns to walls with some interesting contrasts 100 years ago and recently to utterly soulless 30 story steel and glass walls over the last thirty years is a bit distressing to me personally.But to be candid, my childhood was spent in the Eastern Virginia equivalent of Mayberry, and my knowledge of architecture is limited to my dim recollections of whatever I learned in a couple of Art History classes in the 1970's and a couple of textbooks by guys named Jansen and Gardner, I think.
