"Mini-grid is available here:

At a twentieth of the capability for a tenth of the price, it would make sense for me as a backup system. I could put the waste heat to work also for DHW & house heat.

"Alternatively, you can get a pretty big solar system here for around $1.5/watt + racking costs. "

With solar, at present we are combining additional attic insulation with shelving designed to brace the south roof. The roof rafters and floor joists become trusses. PV prices are still too high. But a PVT (photovoltaic thermal) liquid cooled system might make sense, if they become available in this country. We have two 1" PEX tubes from attic to basement moving heated liquid into an underground group of small PEX tubes for annual heat storage. The heat comes from a 4' x 6' DIY made heat exchanger with a 20" fan blowing attic air through it. The results show the system can handle more BTUs/Hour if available. When preparations are done, we want to modify the system to prewarm incoming hot water before passing the liquid through the underground tubes.

DIY allows some things to become affordable!!!
