"Monk said he wanted the incident to be treated as a learning experience, but the commander wanted to do more. Monk said this led to a discussion in which the commander pressed him into saying he also had a moral objection to gay marriage. Monk said it was a “very, very contentious” discussion"

Bottom line: Sgt. Monk proposes a slap on the wrist for the junior Sergeant who was clearly wrong. Commander disagrees with Sgt Monk and orders him to do more than a wrist slap.

Sgt. Monk decides to argue with his commander and gets into a "contentious discussion" when given an order.

Sounds like Sgt Monk refused to follow orders.

I don't give a darn about Sgt Monk's religious beliefs or the commander's sexual partners- that's irrelevant. His job was to carry out his orders as directed.

Sgt Monk is lucky HIS butt wasn't brought up on charges.

Or at least that's the way it works in the Army. Does the Air Force have some sort of new standards that allows Sergeants to refuse to obey the orders of the officer's appointed over them?
