"Philipo I think since I can't get through the boot process using the actual XP Pro disk to either get to the repair console or the format utility / and Windows installation I think you are suggesting using a third party boot disk and format with it first. Quite frankly I had not thought of that and it is an excellent point. In the old days I think we used an old Win 95 disk or a boot and format disc free from the hd manufacturer. Thank you and I will look into that."

Or, since yopu said you docked it to your system, you could format it on your sys. To really chean it to the bone I agree the utils from the srive mfg are what I use too.

"I have only one windows xp disc and don't have any reason to suspect it is bad. No scratches are noticable and it can be read by other computers."

If this is a sys from a vendor like Dell you can order a replacement install disc (or one if none orig provided).....at least you use to be able to as of 2 years ago (XP is long in the tooth).
